Question: What is the difference between the New Generation Ergo and the Ergo Classic?

Answer:

  • The waist band on the NG has been redesigned. The Ergo Classic had this flap thingy that was supposed to make it comfy but all it does is get in the way or dangle down. You were supposed to thread this thingy and it was a hassle so it wound up dangling down and looking silly.
  • The body of the carrier is a bit wider. This is great with a toddler as it will support more of their leg. In the Classic, a large toddler could look like they were dangling more than riding piggy back.
  • The darts in the carrier body make it easy to get a good fit every time. The backband is meant to sit flat against the wearer's body in order to transfer weight. If it hangs away from the body, more weight will be supported by the shoulder straps. The Classic Ergo can be worn correctly but the NG Ergo just sits right without fussing because of the darts.
  • Something about the shoulder straps is just better. They have more curvature and it seems like they fit a bit better and also there doesn't seem to be anything touching the boobs; I had a concern sometimes with the Classic that maybe a strap touching a boob could lead to a plugged duct.
  • The storage pocket is handy and you can reach it with baby on your back because it's a vertical zipper. I often keep a spare dipe or something there.
  • The waist pouch attaches to your front no matter if baby is in back or front.
  • The hood design is better. There are D-rings to attach the straps to both in the out of the way and the in-use positions. The hood still falls out of the storage pocket but if you attach the straps it doesn't get in your way. I think the classic hood just flopped around and never stayed in its pocket.
  • SNAPS! The NG hood has quiet snaps instead of noisy velcro which is sure to wake a sleeping baby.
  • The chest strap adjustments can be tightened to the shoulder straps once you find where you'd like them. This is important for 2 reasons. First, you can choose where you like the chest strap and never adjust it again, and 2nd, with the hip position, the chest strap could fall off the shoulder straps and get lost so since it can be fixed in position, you don't need to worry about this.
  • Hip carry - the NG has brought the hip carry back! The Ergo Classic didn't offer a hip carry option. There was an Ergo before that that had a hip carry.

Question: I am finding my baby very heavy in my Baby Bjorn. What do you recommend?

Answer: You might consider the Ergo or Patapum. They can both be worn front or back and have 2 shoulder straps. All of our baby carriers transfer some of the weight to your hips. As your baby grows, it's best to not be limited to a front carrier. The Ergo and Patapum can both be worn front or back and are simple to use. Wraps are an elegant option and can be used in a variety of posit

Question: Which should I buy?  The Ergo Baby Carrier or the Patapum Baby Carrier?

Answer: Both are great products. Both can be worn front or back. The following are a few areas to consider:

First, obviously, the price is different, but you do get more with the Ergo Baby Carrier. The Ergo has a pouch in which the baby sits created by darts on the fabric. In the Patapum, the baby creates the pouch by proper placement when putting the carrier on.  The Ergo lining makes it a more comfortable ride for baby. The Patapum is not as plush. The contoured shoulder straps on the Ergo make it a more comfortable carrier for the wearer. The pocket on the back of the Ergo is very handy. The safety elastics on the Ergo's buckles are a great feature in case a buckle ever failed. Also, the Ergo baby carrier can be converted to a hip carrier. Which baby carrier do I reach for? It depends. If I am going on a trip and I can only take one, it's the Ergo baby carrier every time. I But for every day light errands, it is often the Patapum because of the style and color. (I love the khaki!)
The second area is style. It is a personal preference which baby carrier you prefer the look of. The Patapum has a detachable sleep hood and without the hood, it looks more sleek than the Ergo. The hood itself is constructed of a see-through mesh on the Patapum, while the Ergo hood is solid light weight cotton. The color may also be a deciding factor.
The third thing to consider is the size of the wearer.  Some smaller moms find the Patapum fits their torso length a bit more snugly. Check out the buying guide for more information.

Question: What is your return policy?

Answer: The Ergo Baby Carrier is eligible for a full refund in the first 60 days. All other products must be returned within 5 days of receipt. There will be a $10 restocking fee for all other baby carriers, $5 for other items. Returns and exchanges must include all of the original packaging and literature. Answer: All orders ship by the next business day via USPS Priority Mail from our warehouse in Florida. Please check the USPS website to see when your item will arrive. Most items arrive in 1 to 3 days from when they are shipped. Shipping is FREE for all items.

Question: Can I nurse my baby in your baby carriers?

Question: How does the Ergo compare to the Kelty?

Answer: I had a frame pack with my older daughter and I always felt like a bull in a China shop with it! The Ergo is a great way to keep my toddler out of trouble when I'm shopping because she's very close against me and I don't have to worry about knocking things over. It was difficult to swing the Kelty up and onto my back. It's very easy to get my daughter into the Ergo. I found the Kelty made my shoulders and neck very tired because I could never get it adjusted snug enough. I wear the Ergo for hours and it never bothers me.

Question: I tried to get my 7 month old baby on my back with the Ergo but I couldn't do it.

Answer: Practice. You might wait a month. It gets easier. Continue wearing baby on front for now and on your back when someone can help you. When you want to try it on your own, have someone spot you and use a mirror. Watch the instructional video a few times through and read it carefully. It's not just you learning; your baby is also learning how to be on your back!

Question: I can't close the chest strap when I wear the Ergo on my front. I just can't reach it - I'm not flexible enough.

Answer: In order to get to this strap and get it positioned comfortably, put your baby on your chest and lift both shoulder straps. Then loosen one shoulder strap while holding baby with your other hand. Reach back and close the chest strap behind you. It will be much easier to close it if one of the shoulder straps is very loose. Slide the chest strap down both shoulder straps as far as you can reach. Now simply tighten the shoulder straps until they are comfortable.

Question: When I wear the Ergo on my front, the chest strap digs into my neck and isn't comfortable.

Answer: You need to wear the chest strap a little lower. Please see the previous answer for more tips.

Question: How do I nurse in the Ergo?

Answer: To nurse in the Ergo, loosen both shoulder straps a lot until baby drops down low enough. It is helpful to wear clothing that can be pulled down from the top. You may have to help baby reach by lifting a little. Once baby is done, you can tighten the straps. Note that when you are learning to nurse in any baby carrier, it's often helpful to stand, rock, bounce, or walk. First get the baby latched on and then concern yourself with adjusting the baby carrier. I thought this was one of those "Emperor has no clothes" tricks that people talked about but no one could really do with an infant until I had my second baby.

Question: How do I use the sleep hood on the Ergo?

Answer: When you suspect your baby is falling asleep, you can have the straps to the hood unsnapped and dangling down, ready to go. If the baby is on front, you will need to put the hood on and thread the straps behind you. It is not critical to thread them through the D-rings on the shoulder strap. In fact, with baby in front, you may need to only use one of the straps on the sleep hood because you can see where your baby's head is resting. Thread the strap through the D-ring or anything you can reach and snap it. If your baby is on your back, you can ask for help or do the following: Lean forward at the waist and rock side to side until you feel your baby's head come to rest between your shoulder blades. Hold the tips of both ends of the sleep hood straps and lift them up and over your head. Hold them in front and make sure you caught your baby's head in the sleep hood before standing up. Try again if you didn't get the hood over the baby's head. Once your baby's head is in the hood, hold onto the straps and stand up slowly. It is helpful to rock a little to keep baby asleep. Now run the straps through the D-rings on the chest strap and snap them.

Question: Will I be too hot in the summer with a black Ergo? My baby is 3 months old and I am so hot with her on my chest. I'm looking to buy an Ergo when she's a little older.

Answer: We live in South Florida and we use the black Ergo. The cotton is very cool and breathable and is fully lined in a soft fabric. Our baby never feels overheated. We do tend to wear her on our backs as it's much cooler than on the chest. On a related note, you are still experiencing overheating related to hormones and pregnancy. It takes longer than 3 months for your hormones to regulate and your temperature to normalize after birth. You will be more comfortable in general in a few more months or sooner.

Question: It looks really tricky to put the baby on the back with the Ergo or Patapum. How hard is it to learn?

Answer: It depends. Some people pick it up immediately and others have to struggle with it for a while. I am one of the latter. That is why I teach it. I understand every aspect of why it's difficult and can help you. If you have any questions, please call for a consultation. If you are very inflexible, back carriers might not be for you.

Question: I have loved wearing my baby in my sling but now he's getting too heavy and it's bothering my back. What do you recommend?

Answer: The Ultimate Hip Carrier is great for heavier babies. It's simple to use like a sling but it transfers a lot of the weight to your hips.

Question: My back hurts a lot since pregnancy. Will I be able to wear my baby?

Answer: YES! You are already lifting your baby all the time anyway. I would recommend a 2-shouldered carry such as the Ergo. I also have had intermittent back pain for years. When it is bad, I can't use a sling or even carry my baby in from the car on my hip. If I put her in the Ergo, front or back, I can wear her for hours because it's totally symmetrical.
