The word Obi means belt or sash in Japanese. The Obi baby carrier is constructed of two belts of fabric that cross twice and are sewn where they intersect, creating an X shaped carrier. It slips over the wearer’s head and onto the shoulders. The center of the crosses is situated in the front and back of the wearer’s body. The front cross creates a seat/back support for the baby and the back cross serves as the wearer’s support, spreading the weight of the baby evenly. The efficient weight distribution uses a large area of the wearer’s back and shoulders. To prevent chafing, the Obi is lightly padded in the baby’s leg area of the carrier. At the top of the front cross there is an additional triangle piece of fabric that makes for a comfortable head rest for the baby. It can be opened to ease the access of putting the baby in or out of the carrier.

Newborns

Obi also comes with an infant harness, added security, for infants less then 15 lbs. This harness is fully independent of the carrier and can be removed later when the baby is older.

Beco Obi Official Sizing

Size 1 will fit users of size 0-8 (pants) or S/M (t-shirt)
Size 2 will fit users of size 10-16 (pants) or L/XL (t-shirt)

Sizing note: Sizing does not have to be as precise as pouch carriers. When you have the correct size, the baby’s bottom will be at your tummy.

These sizing recommendations have been known to run a bit large; I am a tall size 12 and the Size 1 fits just fine.

. The Beco Obi is a hot new baby carrier. It's designed to go to up to around 25 pounds but really, I think the baby's age is a more critical factor. I was actually able to get my 3 1/2 year old daughter into the Obi. She loved it, but her legs were definitely too long. What a shame. It is really cool that there is finally a baby carrier suitable for facing out, especially for older babies. Why? Because the fabric at the bottom can be spread open and support the baby on a wider base; all the baby's weight isn't just supported on a narrow strip of fabric. Especially as a baby gets older, it just isn't comfortable for them to have so much weight on a narrow area. And ask any chiropractor and they will tell you that it is not optimal positioning to have your baby supported just by the crotch and with an arch in the lower back. With the Obi, you can widen the base and bend the baby's legs a little which puts an curve in their lower back. When facing out, this is especially important.
